NCAA Central Regional Tee Times -- Saturday, May 7
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Following the first two rounds of the 2011 NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional, Northwestern remains in contention to advance to the NCAA Championships with only 18 holes left to be played. Highlighted by senior Rebecca Lederhausen's (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) 1-over 73, NU sits in a tie for sixth-place after shooting a combined 18-over 306, with three 'Cats firing a 77 or better on Friday.
Aided by four birdies, including two in a row on the fourth and fifth holes, Lederhausen had her best day of the regionals and the second-best round of her season thus far. The senior moved up 46 spots in the individual standing and now sits in a tie for 48th with a 10-over 154 after two.
Rebecca's younger sister, Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central), began the day with three bogeys in the first four holes on the back nine, but went on to sink three birdies on the front nine to finish with a 3-over 75. Lederhausen (74-75=149), who began the day in a tie for 15th, moved up to a tie for 11th after the second round.
Freshman Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), who led Northwestern to a fifth-place finish after the first round, shot a 5-over 77 on Friday. Brown (73-77=150) maintained great consistency on the back nine to start the day, but struggled when she reached the front nine, only dropping one birdie against three bogeys and a double bogey. Brown is still in the top-20 in the individual standings as she is in a tie for 17th-place.
Uncharacteristically, Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) shot a 9-over 81 in the second round, which dropped the sophomore to a tie for 52nd place. Weaver (74-81=155) was unable to sink any birdies and suffered three double bogeys on the back nine. Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) rounded out the Wildcat lineup, also shooting 9-over 81. She now sits at 18-over 162 after two rounds.
With 18 holes remaining, Northwestern is right in the thick of things, sitting only one stroke behind Big Ten foe Ohio State (31-over 607) in fifth and only six back of host Notre Dame (26-over 602) in fourth. Playing in Northwestern's favor, however, is the fact that the top eight teams in the regional round will advance to the NCAA Championships held in College Station, Texas.
Scores went up across the board on Friday, as even UCLA, the Central Region's top seed, posted a 13-over 301 to finish two rounds at 16-over 592. The Bruins remain in first place over LSU and Minnesota as the Tigers and Gophers are both at 22-over 598. Minnesota had the best second-round by four strokes on Friday, shooting a 9-over 297. Stanford (32-over 608) sits in sixth with Northwestern followed by Arkansas at 34-over 610 in eighth. Chattanooga and Texas both remained the in the same spot and both round out the top-10 with a 36-over 612 and 37-over 613 respectively.
Saturday's final 18 holes will get underway at 7 a.m. CT with the 24-team field again teeing off in waves. The Wildcats are teamed up with Ohio State and Notre Dame in the morning group and will tee-off at 8 a.m. CT. The tee time was determined by a tiebreaker between Stanford and Northwestern at sixth-place. NU's Rebecca Lederhausen had a better round than Stanford's Lila Barton, giving the 'Cats the time advantage heading into the final round.
