EVANSTON, Ill. -- Milwaukee scored five times in its last three at-bats to break open a tight contest and defeat Northwestern 10-4 Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. Paul Snieder homered and doubled for the Wildcats.
Things looked good early on for NU as a pair of errors by the Panthers in the bottom of the first inning led to two Wildcat runs. With two outs and no one on, Chris Lashmet was hit by a Mike Schneider offering and he moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Snieder, who has been red-hot at the plate as of late, then doubled him home to give Northwestern the lead. Chris Kontos then swung and missed at a third strike, but the ball got away from Milwaukee catcher Paul Hoenecke. When Hoenecke's throw to first attempting to retire Kontos was errant, Snieder raced around to score from third.
Jack Havey was sharp on the mound for the Wildcats over the first two innings of play and then stranded a pair of men in scoring position in the third. However, the Panthers led off the fourth inning with five straight hits to score four times and take the lead. Jack Livingston and Jack Quigley combined to allow a fifth run in the frame as the guests surged out to a three-run advantage.
Northwestern got back in the game with solo tallies in the fifth and sixth innings. Colby Everett led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and later scored on an RBI groundout by Cody Stevens. Cameron Amsrud replaced Schneider to start the sixth and Snieder socked a one-out, solo homer to the opposite field gap in left-center to make it 5-4. It was the second home run in as many games for the NU first baseman who is 7-for-11 with nine RBI and five runs scored over the last three games.
The Wildcats brought on three lightly used freshmen pitchers over the final three innings of play and the Panthers were able to take advantage, scoring twice in both the seventh and eighth innings and once more in the ninth to pull away.
Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday as it opens a three-game Big Ten series with Penn State at Rocky Miller Park.
