WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern made a mini charge Saturday in the third round of the 2011 Big Ten Championships, jumping into a tie for third place entering Sunday's final round at Purdue's Kampen Course.

Northwestern went off the front nine Saturday morning paired with Michigan and Purdue, shooting eight strokes better than the Boilermakers and 11 shots lower than the Wolverines. The team was a combined 2-under on the day through eight holes before the 478-yard par-4 ninth hole bit the 'Cats for three bogeys and two double bogeys. Like it has all weekend, the back nine of the Kampen Course sent scores sky high, leaving the Wildcats with a third-round 16-over 304 and a 54-hole total of 34-over 898 (301-293-304).

NU is tied with Indiana in third, four shots behind second place Iowa. The duo is four shots in front of fifth-place Ohio State. Illinois leads the tournament at 15-over 879.

Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) moved into the top-10 following a third round even-par 72. On Friday, Lipsky pressed too much in his first round as defending conference champion and carded a 6-over 78. He responded in the afternoon with a much stronger even-par 72, and his play only continued to improve on Saturday.

After a bogey at No. 2, Lipsky made birdies at Nos. 3, 6 and 7 to get to 2-under before -- like every one of his teammates -- he carded an over-par total on No. 9. He got that stroke back immediately with a birdie at the par-5 10th, then carded seven pars and a bogey the rest of the way to turn in an even-par 72 and jump to sixth individually at 6-over 222 (78-72-72), five off the lead.

Junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) began Saturday with five-straight pars before an eventful bogey-birdie-birdie-bogey finish to the front side. On the back nine, Chun made seven pars, but a bogey at No. 12 and a double bogey at No. 14 left him at 3-over 75 for the day and 7-over 223 (74-74-75) for the tournament. Chun is in 13th position entering Sunday's final round.

Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) has an inauspicious start to his third round, advancing his opening drive no more than 75 yards off the tee. He got up-and-down to save par on the hole, the first of eight-straight pars until a double bogey at No. 9. The back nine was not kind to Losole, who ended up at 6-over 78 for the round and 9-over 225 (74-73-78) for the tournament, good for 20th position.

Freshman Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) struggled through his third round, making a pair of double bogeys on the front on the way to a 5-over 41 going out. Three more bogeys and five pars on the back side led to an 8-over 80 on Saturday and a 54-hole 30th place total of 13-over 229 (75-74-80).

Senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) opened his third round with a birdie but lost his tee shot into the water on the par-3 third hole, making triple bogey. Still at 2-over after the front nine, Dupont pured a 4-iron over the green with his second shot from 260 yards on the par-5 10th. He got up-and-down for birdie to fight back to 1-over on the day, giving a little fist pump when the putt dropped.

Unfortunately, Dupont faded from there, making four bogeys and a double the rest of the way to finish at 7-over 79 for the round. He is in 35th place at 16-over 232 (78-75-79).

The 2011 Big Ten Championships conclude with the final round tomorrow, Sunday, May 1. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com. Live tweets from the course are available from Pat Goss at @NUGolf_LIVE.
