BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- A three-run first inning by Northwestern proved to be enough as the Wildcats downed Campbell 3-2 Saturday to to win the series and wrap up their spring break trip.
After the teams split the first two games of the series, NU jumped on Campbell starter Hector Cedano right away in the opening half-inning of play. Trevor Stevens started the game with a single and was on second base with one out when he came around to score on a throwing error on a ball hit by Chris Lashmet. Lashmet stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before Paul Snieder brought him home with an RBI double. A two-out single by Brant Cavagnaro gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Dan Tyson worked around singles in each of the first three innings before the Camels got a run in the fourth to make it 3-1.
After the fast start, the Wildcats were unable to cash in against Cedano and Logan Self who worked the final 7 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit.
Tyson was stellar on the mound for Northwestern, working into the ninth inning. After getting a groundout to start the bottom of the ninth, Tyson surrendered a double to Blake Boyce. Matt Gailey came on for the 'Cats and got a flyout for the second out before allowing an RBI single to Ben Fish that got the hosts within a run.
Things got anxious as Ethan Bramschreiber allowed a walk before a wild pitch moved the tying and winning runs into scoring position. However, Bramschreiber struck out Ellis Lowe end the game and earn his first collegiate save.
Tyson put together his best start as a Wildcat to date, hurling 8 1/3 innings. He scattered nine hits while striking out six without a walk to pick up his first win. Stevens had two hits for NU.
