MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern senior Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) claimed 12th place in the 200 IM at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Minnesota Thursday night, securing his second career honorable mention All-America honor in the event.
Tyler, who qualified in 16th position with a career-best time in Thursday's morning session, posted a time of 1:45.03 in the consolation final heat to close the first day of action at the national meet. Tyler improved upon his 2010 finish, when he took 15th in the 200 IM.
Tyler's finish gives Northwestern at least one All-American in 13 of the last 16 seasons dating to 1996. It also moved NU into 23rd place on the team scoreboard with five team points thus far.
Northwestern's NCAA Championships continue on Friday, March 28, with Tyler and sophomore Charlie Rimkus competing in the 400 IM.
