EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern opens up a busy spring break trip Friday as it participates in the RussMatt Central Florida Invite in Winter Haven, Fla. The Wildcats are slated to play nine games in nine days on the trek.
The Wildcats open up against Jacksonville State on Friday before facing Massachusetts and Army in Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday before closing with a contest against Dartmouth on Sunday.
NU then ventures to North Carolina, playing single games against NC State on Tuesday and Wednesday before playing contests at Campbell on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The trip to Raleigh to face the Wolfpack will be a homecoming for Northwestern assistant coach Tim Stoddard who starred on both the diamond and the basketball court for NC State in the early 1970s.
Junior center fielder Trevor Stevens enters the weekend ranked second in the Big Ten with a .429 batting average and a .533 on-base percentage. He has hit safely in all 11 games to open the season.
Senior third baseman is second on the team with a .349 batting average and second in the Big Ten with a team-leading seven doubles.
Sophomore right-hander Luke Farrell paces all Northwestern starters with a 2-0 record and a 2.87 ERA. He is slated to get the start in Friday's opening game of the trip against Jacksonville State. Farrell has fanned 16 batters in 15 2/3 innings pitched.
In the bullpen, junior closer Paul Snieder has picked up where he left off last season. He has yet to allow a run in four appearances and 6 2/3 innings pitched while converting both of his save opportunities.
