ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- A five-run fourth inning by Saint Louis proved too much for Northwestern to overcome as the Wildcats fell 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader at Billiken Sports Complex on Friday.

NU rallied to win the first game of the day, 8-5.

The Billikens got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Wildcat starter Dan Tyson hit Cody Cotter with a pitch to open the inning and Cotter stole second with one away before scoring on a single by Nick Becker.

The hosts were able to break the game open in the fourth as the first five batters of the inning all reached.

Meanwhile, Northwestern struggled to get things going offensively against Brett Vanover. The freshman right-hander limited the Wildcats to five hits over seven shutout innings.

The Wildcats spoiled the shutout bid in the ninth as Chris Lashmet doubled with one away and pinch-runner Jack Livingston eventually scored on a single by fellow freshman Jake Straub. NU loaded the bases but was unable to mount a comeback.

Both squads finished with seven hits with Straub collecting two for Northwestern.

The teams conclude their four-game series Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
