Series History
Northwestern and Navy are getting together for the first time in their respective histories, but that does not mean that the 'series' lacks any intriguing story lines. The Midshipmen are in their fourth season under the direction of legendary coach Cindy Timchal, who coached Northwestern for the first nine seasons of women's lacrosse varsity competition at NU.
Timchal compiled a 76-40 record during her time in Evanston but in 1991 moved on to the head coaching gig at Maryland, where she built the Terrapins into a perennial powerhouse program and remained in College Park through 2006. Her Terrapin teams were of course boosted by the play of Northwestern head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, who notched a win in the only previous time she has stood on the opposite sidelines from Timchal back in 2006.

Northwestern holds a 4-0 all-time edge against the Hoyas following its 15-10 victory over Georgetown on March 6 of last year at Lakeside Field. Katrina Dowd paced Northwestern in that game with five goals and three assists.
Wildcats Rake in ALC Offensive, Defensive Player of the Week Honors
On the heels of road victories over No. 3 North Carolina and No. 11 Vanderbilt, the American Lacrosse Conference announced Monday that Shannon Smith was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week while Taylor Thornton earned the same honor on the defensive side of the ball. Smith finished the week with six goals and three assists as the 'Cats defeated No. 3 UNC in overtime, a victory that was capped off by the game-winner scored by Thornton with 15 seconds to go in the period.

Northwestern goalkeeper Brianne LoManto and the Wildcats defense is off to a solid start in 2011 despite the challenging early-season opposition. LoManto ranks 10th nationally in goals against average at 6.78 as she and her back line held two All-Americans scoreless last week -- UNC's Corey Donahoe and Vanderbilt's Ally Carey.
