EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcats junior Brianne LoManto (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) of the women's lacrosse team and senior Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) of the men's tennis team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
LoManto, who picked up the second ALC Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career, had nine saves against the Fighting Irish. She had a pair of key stops early, helping keep Notre Dame off the board and helping the Wildcats break out to a 3-0 lead. Then, leading 14-11, LoManto had a pair of crucial saves down the stretch to preserve the victory for Northwestern. LoManto ranks fifth all-time in program history in saves (177), while her 159 in 2010 was the second-best single season total in NU history.
McCarthy extended his singles winning streak to four matches in a stellar weekend in which he won matches at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles lines. He opened with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 4 against Bryant Salcedo of 28th-ranked Vanderbilt. He then followed that up with identical two-set wins against Northern and Western Illinois, the latter of which came in his first showing of the year at No. 2. McCarthy also won a pair of matches while playing at the No. 1 doubles spot for the first time this season. He is now 7-2 in singles and 8-2 in doubles in his senior campaign.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) of the volleyball team. Holthus volunteered at the recent Snowflake event at Chute Middle School in Evanston, which this year took the theme of bullying awareness and prevention. Holthus managed a challenge station where groups of students competed to earn points in teambuilding exercises.
