RIO MAR, P.R. -- Facing strong cross winds that made scoring difficult Monday during the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic, Northwestern struggled to a 15-over 303 to finish the day ranked 14th in the 15-team field.

The Wildcats' 36-hole total of 16-over 592 (289-303) places them ahead of No. 29 Michigan in 15th place. NU is just five shots away from the top-10, making a big move possible with a strong final round Tuesday. Northwestern was in a three-way tie for seventh following the opening round Sunday.

"Today was a tough day that did not get better," head coach Pat Goss said. "In these conditions, you have to stay patient, stay in control of your ball and fight all day. After a slow start, we just plugged along and unfortunately could not make anything too interesting happen."

After leading Northwestern on day one, sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) was able to battle the conditions and card a steady round to again pace the `Cats on day two. Losole made a bogey at No. 13 before carding birdie at No. 15 to get back to even par, but immediately found trouble on the par-4 16th, earning a double-bogey six. From there, Losole recovered to par eight of his final nine holes for a 36-hole total of 1-over 145, good for 22nd position individually.

Junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) had a tough beginning to his Monday when his tee shot on No. 9 -- his first hole of the day -- could not be located, leading to a double-bogey six. He immediately made birdie on No. 10, but another double-bogey on No. 13 put him at 3-over on the day. From that point on, he alternated three birdies against three bogeys to finish the round at 3-over 75, giving him a two-day total of 5-over 149 (74-75) and placing him in 52nd place.

Senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) got off to a great start Monday, playing his first seven holes in 1-under par following a birdie on the par-5 15th. Three bogeys and a birdie in a six-hole stretch from No. 18 back around to No. 5 put him at 1-over on the day, then disaster struck on the par-5 eighth when he was forced to take a triple-bogey eight, ballooning his score to 4-over 76 for the round. Dupont is in 60th individually at 7-over 151 (75-76).

After firing an under-par round Sunday, senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) was unable to replicate that performance in Monday's blustery conditions. He made six bogeys before his first birdie of the second round came on his 14th hole of the day. Lipsky would card a birdie on the par-5 eighth for the second-straight round to finish Monday at 5-over 77, giving him an 46th-place 36-hole total of 4-over 148 (71-77).

Freshman Brad Shigezawa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou Academy) began the second round on No. 10, playing the back nine in 2-over par. A five-over par stretch from hole Nos. 3-6, however, sent his round into a tailspin, contributing to an 8-over 80 and a two-day total of 10-over 154 (74-80). Shigezawa is in 69th place.

The final round of the Puerto Rico Classic will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 22. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com while Goss' live tweets from the course can be found here.
