RIO MAR, P.R. -- Sophomore Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) saved her best performance for last, recording a 1-under 71 over the final 18 holes of the 2011 Lady Puerto Rico to finish tied for fourth in the individual standings with a 2-over 218. Weaver's effort helped Northwestern tie for sixth place overall, finishing the three-day tournament with a 52-over 916 and earning its fourth top-10 team finish of the season.

"We played well when we needed to, and beat some good teams," said head coach Emily Fletcher. "Lauren played great, very solid throughout the entire tournament. It was nice to get off to a solid start to our spring season."

Weaver, who entered Tuesday's final round tied for seventh overall, played her most solid round of golf of the event, birdieing holes eight and 11 while notching pars on 15 of her remaining 16 holes. The top-five finish is her second of the season as Weaver has notched a top-10 finish in four of Northwestern's six events.

The remaining four Wildcats concluded a consistent tournament as well, finishing within two strokes of each other. Freshman Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) recovered from her disappointing day Monday to card a 6-over 78, bringing her three-day total to an 18-over 234, one stroke better than senior Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) who posted Northwestern's second-best score of the day with a 5-over 77.

Junior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) and senior Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) each concluded the event with a 20-over 236. Lindenschmidt posted her best score of the tournament in Tuesday's final round with a 6-over 78.

Northwestern, which began the final 18 holes in a sixth-place tie with Kent State, finished in similar style as both the Wildcats and Golden Flashes tallied a 16-over 304 to retain their positions. NU's 304 was its lowest round of the Lady Puerto Rico, shaving three strokes off its opening round and one shot off its second round totals.

Competing against an extremely competitive 18-team field, Northwestern held its own, posting a better finish than five teams ranked above it in the weekly Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, including a pair of top-20 schools in Oklahoma (No. 15) and Auburn (No. 17). The Wildcats also finished second out of the five Big Ten schools competing in the Lady Puerto Rico, beating out Michigan, Indiana and Penn State.

Top-ranked Alabama repeated as the Lady Puerto Rico champions, notching an 11-over 875 and holding off a surging Iowa State club by five shots to take home the team title. Florida State (27-over 891), Purdue (32-over 896) and Georgia (43-over 907) rounded out the top five.

Northwestern will have little time to make adjustments as the Wildcats will be back on the course early next week, heading to Parrish, Fla. for the 2011 Central District Invitational on Monday, Feb. 21 and Tuesday, Feb. 22.
