EVANSTON, Ill. -- Seventh-ranked Northwestern opened up the 2011 NU Duals with a 3-2 mark at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC) Saturday. The Wildcats improve to 25-5 in dual meets this season and now prepare for Sunday's second day of the tournament.

Northwestern opened up the weekend with a convincing 23-4 decision over UC San Diego, sparked by a 9-0 record by the foil squad and an 8-1 performance from the epée. But a pair of ranked opponents proved to have the Wildcats' number on the day as NU fell to ninth-ranked Temple 15-12 before dropping an 18-9 decision to conference rival Ohio State.

The Wildcats were able to recover in their final two meets of the afternoon, breezing past Fairleigh Dickinson 22-5 off another 9-0 showing by the foil squad and an 8-1 mark by the Northwestern sabre. NU kept the momentum rolling in its final match of the day, defeating Cal Tech 24-3 as the epée team notched a perfect 9-0 record in the finale.

All three weapons finished with a winning record through the first day of competition at the Duals, led by the foil squad's 34-11 as it finished 3-2. The Wildcat epée team was 4-1 on the day with a combined weapon total of 31-14 while the sabre squad also finished 3-2 through the five meets with a 23-22 record.

Prior to the start of competition, Northwestern honored its nine seniors with a ceremony on strip one. Alex Arkin, Curie Chang, Irisa Chen, Jill Mahen, Cristina Mazuski, Courtney Park, Sara Peck, Lisa Sachs and Nicole Tilley all were recognized for their contribution to the Wildcat program.

Sunday's final round once again gets underway at 8 a.m. at SPAC. Northwestern fences Stanford in the day's opening match, followed by bouts against North Carolina and fourth-ranked Princeton. The Wildcats then close out the weekend against conference opponents Detroit and Cleveland State. The event is free and is open to the public.
