PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Fresh off a 4-2 record at the NYU Invitational Saturday, seventh-ranked Northwestern continued its impressive east coast trip with a perfect 6-0 mark at the 2011 Philadelphia Invitational Sunday. Northwestern improves to 15-2 on the year and upped its record against ranked opponents to 3-2 this season.
Northwestern faced arguably its toughest bout of the day in its first meet of the day in the City of Brotherly Love, going up against eighth-ranked Temple, the host of the day's tournament. The Wildcat foil squad had a rough start, falling 3-6 to the Owls for its first loss of the season, but the Northwestern epée team carried NU to a 15-12 victory, improving the 'Cats record against ranked opponents this season to 2-2.
Head coach Laurie Schiller's squad easily took the next two meets, routing Sacred Heart 25-2 before downing Johns Hopkins 24-3. The foil team responded after its rough start by sweeping both meets with the sabre squad dropping just one bout in the pair of Northwestern victories.
The Wildcats' final match against a ranked opponent came against ninth-ranked Penn, and this time the foil team was up to the challenging, earning a 7-2 decision over the Quakers and making up for a difficult 4-5 defeat by the epée. Northwestern's 16-11 win was the third of the year for the 'Cats over a ranked foe, improving to 3-2 against the nation's top-10.
Northwestern's bid for Philadelphia sweep met little resistance from that point as the Wildcats easily took care of NJIT 23-4 before sweeping Drew 27-0 in the weekend's finale. NU's foil squad continued to pace the Wildcats, winning 11 of 12 meets over the weekend and finishing Sunday with a combined 46-8 record. Both the epée and sabre teams won five of their six matches in Philadelphia, posting a 43-11 and 41-13 record respectively.
Up next for Northwestern is a short bus trip to South Bend, Ind., competing in the Notre Dame Duals next Saturday, Jan. 29, and Sunday, Jan. 30. The schedule for the meet will be released later in the week.
