SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Northwestern opened up its dual meet schedule in dominating style, notching a victory in all five dual meets at the UC San Diego West Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats' foil squad paced the team on the day, dropping only one match-up and finishing with an overall record of 44-1 in the season opener.
Northwestern, which set a program-record with 45 dual meet victories in 2009-10, was looking to make a statement in the six-team invitational and did so from the opening bout, toppling the host Tritons 25-2 in the day's first meet. Both the Wildcat epée and sabre teams posted 8-1 decisions against UC San Diego, complemented by the perfect 9-0 mark by the foil squad.
The Wildcats continued to roll through the morning session, defeating Florida 18-9 before earning a 19-8 victory over Air Force as the foil team continued its dominating play with perfect 9-0 records against both the Gators and Falcons. Northwestern then closed out the afternoon with two more convincing victories, defeating Stanford 20-7 before roaring past Cal Tech 23-4 in the day's finale.
Junior Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and sophomore Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) paced the nearly unstoppable effort by the foil squad as the two went undefeated on the afternoon for head coach Laurie Schiller's Wildcats. Sarkisova also notched her 100th career victory in Northwestern's victory over host UC San Diego in the opening meet.
Northwestern takes a break from dual meet competitions next weekend, heading to Dallas, Texas, for the USFA North American Cup on Jan. 14-17. But the break will be short lived for the Wildcats as the next five scheduled events will consist of dual meets, beginning Saturday, Jan. 22 at the NYU Duals in New York, N.Y.
