Vote For Shannon As The Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year!
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) is one of four nominees for the Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year. Fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite player through Monday, Nov. 29, with the results to be published in the January edition of the magazine.
Smith was a first team IWLCA All-America selection after recording 69 goals and 102 points in 2010, the sixth-highest single-season total in Northwestern history. Smith ranked third nationally in points, fourth in goals, sixth in points per game (4.64) and 11th in goals per game (3.14) en route to being named first team All-American Lacrosse Conference. She notched one goal in each game, recording a hat trick 13 times in 2010 while helping the Wildcats to a runner-up finish, garnering NCAA all-tournament honors in the process.
Smith has started all 45 games of her Northwestern career, notching 102 goals and 38 assists in a Wildcat uniform. During her first two years in Evanston, she has helped Northwestern to a 41-2 record, including a 13-0 mark in ALC play, and has been a key member of both the 2009 NCAA championship team and 2010 NCAA runner-up squad. Smith was also one of 24 players named to the U.S. Developmental Team following her freshman campaign.
Joining Smith on the ballot is Ally Carey of Vanderbilt, North Carolina's Corey Donohoe and Maryland's Karri Ellen Johnson. She and the Wildcats are eager to get the 2011 campaign underway, as the schedule for the upcoming season will be announced Wednesday, Nov. 24.
