Northwestern Dominant in Home Opener
In its first home dual action of the season, Northwestern used an aggressive mindset and technically sound wrestling to dominate the NU Duals, winning 36 out of a possible 40 matches to go 3-0 Sunday at NU's Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center (SPAC). The 'Cats began its dual vs. Wisconsin-Whitewater with three pins in four matches, went on to record their first shutout win in nine years -- a 41-0 hammering of South Dakota State -- and capped off the event with a dominating 26-6 win over Northern Iowa.

Freshman Friedley Rock Solid for NU
Freshman Kaleb Friedley (Kearney, Mo./Park Hill) knew coming into the season that he would have the opportunity to hold down the starting spot at 141 pounds and he has made the most of that chance. Friedley is 5-0 with two pins to open the season and on Sunday won a remarkable 13-9 decision over Northern Iowa's Aaron Senzee after falling behind 7-1 to start the match.

Pinning for the Win
Including open tournaments, Northwestern wrestlers have totaled 13 pins over the opening two weekends of competition. By comparison, NU has suffered only two losses by pin, neither of which came in dual matches.

'Cats Excel at Michigan State Open
While Northwestern's varsity lineup was in Evanston preparing for the NU Duals last weekend, a number of young Wildcats enjoyed strong outings at the Michigan State Open while wrestling unattached. True freshman Mike McMullan won four straight matches en route to winning the open heavyweight division, a run that included wins over two Indiana Hoosiers and one Michigan State Spartan.

In other action, freshmen Lee Munster (184) and Alex Polizzi (197) each claimed fifth place in the open division, with Polizzi avenging an earlier loss to MSU's Nick Diarmid by pinning the Spartan in 1:49 in the fifth-place match. Pat Greco rounded out NU's place-winners by taking fifth in the freshman/sophomore division after by posting a 4-2 record.
