EVANSTON, Ill. -- One year after Northwestern inked the nation's No. 2-ranked recruiting class, head coach Drew Pariano took another step toward filling out his future lineup by signing three-time New York State finalist and 2009 champion Grant Greene of South Huntington, N.Y., to an NLI.
"Grant is motivated to be an All-American and NCAA champion at Northwestern and we're going to do everything we can to help him achieve that," Pariano said. "He sees what (NU two-time All-American) Brandon Precin has been able to accomplish in both his college and freestyle careers and he's hungry to reach that level. They are similar in a lot of ways so there is no doubt in my mind Grant is going to be a great fit at Northwestern."
Greene has been a force at the lower weights in his home state since 2007 when he was the Division II runner-up at 96 pounds as an eighth-grader. He then made the move to St. Anthony's High School where he went on to win the 2009 Division I championship at 112 pounds, a run that included a pin in only 24 seconds in the state semifinals. Greene finished his championship season with a 35-2 record.
Last spring, Greene moved up to the 119-pound weight class where he racked up a 34-2 mark and again reached the championship match, bringing his career record entering his senior season to an impressive 134-14. He also helped St. Anthony's win a team championship last season.
Greene is a three-time NHSCA All-American, placing fourth and fifth at 112 pounds as a freshman and sophomore, respectively, and taking seventh at 112 (down one weight class from 119) as a junior in 2010.
He has trained for several seasons at the V.H.W. Club in Syosset, N.Y.
