FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Northwestern senior Maria Mosolova advanced to the second round of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday in New York City. Mosolova defeated Washington's Venise Chan in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, to move on.

Mosolova's tournament continues at 11 a.m. CT Friday when she will square off against Florida sophomore Allie Will, the No. 6 seed in the singles draw. Will also needed three sets to win her opening-round match, defeating UNLV's Lucia Batta.

Northwestern's other representatives at the event -- the doubles tandem of sophomore Linda Abu Mushrefova and freshman Nida Hamilton -- put up a strong fight in their first-round match against Alabama's fourth-seeded Courtney McClane and Alexa Gurachi but ultimately fell, 8-6.
