EAST LANSING, Mich. -- On the first day of singles competition at the Big Ten Indoor Championships hosted by Michigan State, sophomore Spencer Wolf and second-seeded Joshua Graves each advanced to the Flight A round of 16 with two wins.
Graves downed Indiana's Dimitrije Tasic, 6-3, 6-3, in the opener and was impressive in his second-round win, marching on to the round of 16 by defeating Iowa's Will Vasos in swift 6-1, 6-0 fashion. Wolf followed a first-round win over Iowa's Jonas Dierckx by posting a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Penn State's Bryan Welnetz.
Northwestern's sixth-seeded Sidarth Balaji was upset in his opening match in the singles draw by Minnesota sophomore Brendan Ruddock.
Meanwhile, junior Tobias Reitz fell to the Nittany Lions' Jason Lee, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round and was dropped in consolation play in a supertiebreaker (5-7, 6-1, 10-2) by Iowa's Garrett Dunn. In other first-round action, Raleigh Smith was defeated by Michigan State's Denis Bergatov, 6-3, 6-1.
