EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's fall tennis schedule ratchets up this weekend when head coach Arvid Swan and a contingent of four Wildcats head to the campus of Notre Dame for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. All four NU players are entered in the main draws of singles and doubles.
Main draw singles action begins Friday in South Bend. Northwestern junior Joshua Graves received a spot in the 9-16 seeding group and will open his tournament against Wisconsin's Petr Satral.
Fellow junior Tobias Reitz is set for a first-round matchup with DePaul's Ben Hartman. Sophomores Sidarth Balaji and Spencer Wolf will begin their weekends against Illinois State's Matej Zlatkovic and Notre Dame's Casey Watt, respectively.
On the doubles side, Swan has partnered Reitz and Balaji together to take on Michigan's Chris Cha and Shaun Bernstein while Wolf and Graves -- who earned a 9-16 seed in the draw -- are slated to face Roman Turtygin and Maximilian Phillips of Northern Illinois in the first round.
Wolf and Reitz each will be making their second straight appearance at the Regional tournament while Graves and Balaji are entered in the event for the first time in their respective careers. Wolf and Reitz each managed to win consolation singles matches in 2009 but all four Wildcats arrive in South Bend looking to win first-round outings for the first time.
The singles and doubles champions from the NCAA Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place Nov. 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York.
