Stacking Up the 'Cats
Taking a glance at the NCAA field hockey statistics through last weekend's games, NU has distinguished itself on the offensive end of the pitch. The Wildcats are 11th nationally in goals per game with 3.33, nearly on par with their 2009 season average of 3.35 goals per contest. NU also checks in at No. 7 in the nation with 2.92 assists per game. Individually, Chelsea Armstrong continues to pace the Wildcats with 3.00 points per outing (sixth nationally) and 1.08 goals per game, good for 11th among all NCAA players.
NU Clipped by Golden Flashes
Northwestern and Kent State, two programs that are very much on the rise in college field hockey, clashed Sunday in an evenly contested game that needed overtime to determine a winner. The Golden Flashes were able to come up with the golden goal 10 minutes into the seven-on-seven extra session to win 2-1 and hold off the 'Cats, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. NU freshman Maria Kovalchuk came up with the Wildcats' only goal on the day, getting in the scoring column for the first time in her career with a game-tying goal in the second half.
Series Notes
Northwestern and UC Davis are getting together on the field hockey field for the first time since 1981, the Wildcats' second season as a varsity program. NU and Indiana are a bit more familiar, with the 'Cats holding a 9-6 all-time advantage. Indiana won both meetings last season, 2-1 in the regular season and 4-2 in the Big Ten Tournament opener. The Hoosiers will be riding high upon their arrival in Evanston after knocking off No. 10 Louisville (3-2 in overtime) on Tuesday.
Shutting Things Down
One of Northwestern's most reliable performers and leaders this season has been senior defender Sarah Marcincin, a three-year starter for the Wildcats. Along with goalkeeper Amanda Wirth, who ranks second in the Big Ten in saves, Marcincin is the driving force on an NU defense that hasn't allowed more than two goals in a game since Sept. 4.
Wildcats on the International Scene
After spending summer 2010 as assistant coaches for the U.S. senior and U-19 national teams, respectively, NU's Tracey Fuchs and Carla Tagliente recently announced their national team coaching duties for the upcoming competitive cycle. Fuchs will serve as an assistant for the U-17 age group while Tagliente will take the reins as the head coach of the U-19's, giving her the opportunity to continue coaching Northwestern freshman and youth national team member Nikki Parsley.
