EVANSTON, Ill. - Giving back to the community has always been a large part of the Northwestern student-athlete experience. The Wildcat men's and women's soccer programs each recently upheld that tradition by participating in the newly established Wee Wildcats program which offered free training sessions for Evanston AYSO participants.
Throughout the month of September, both NU soccer teams welcomed local youth to Lakeside Field for one-hour clinics and soccer fun.
"The Wee Wildcats program was extremely well received in the local Evanston AYSO community this year," Northwestern head men's coach Tim Lenahan said. "All of our players enjoyed working with some of our biggest fans."
"Giving back to the children is an integral part of being a Northwestern student-athlete. I know our players relished the opportunity to be the ones coaching, rather than the ones being coached for once!"
In all, over 60 sessions were conducted with over 450 local youth participating. The clinics were open to kids at the U-10 level and younger and the Northwestern players and coaches hope they gained some new fans in the process.
"Katie Shields, Neil Jones and both the women's and men's student-athletes deserve much praise for their efforts with Wee Wildcats," head women's coach Stephanie Foster said. "It's fantastic for our student-athletes to spend time with the youth of Evanston. As a result, we hope to see many of the same youth in the stands to cheer us on as we enter in to conference play."
