BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) made her first career goal a game-winner, breaking a second half tie and lifting Northwestern to a 2-1 victory over Indiana Friday night in the Big Ten opener for each side.

Dunn's goal came in the 54th minute. Freshman Bo Podkopacz (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) sent a cross into the box from the left end line, where Dunn met the ball at the far post. The junior put her shot past IU second half substitute Shannon Flower and inside the near post for the goal.

"I'm proud of our team for getting this first road win and three points," said Northwestern head coach Stephanie Foster. "It took a quick response to a soft goal, a great game winning goal, some big saves and surviving a ton of pressure at the end of the game. Overall, we have to be happy to earn this result."

Freshman Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) scored in the first half for the 'Cats, and tied a Northwestern school record in the process. After Indiana's Leigh Anne Cummings scored off a corner kick at the 10:53 mark, Allen answered with a goal of her own just 16 seconds later.

From inside the box, Allen spun past a Hoosier defender and fired a shot from 10 yards out that deflected off the goalkeeper's hand and into the net. Her fifth goal of the season, Allen's tally broke the previous NU mark of 27 seconds as the quickest response to an opponent goal (done twice; most recently by Sam Greene in 2009).

Goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made four saves in the victory for Northwestern, which has now won three of its last four matches.

The Wildcat offense was efficient all evening, putting six of its eight total shots on goal. Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) registered two shots on goal for Northwestern, while Meredith Finsand (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Leigh Jakes (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) each put a shot on target as well.

Northwestern continues its road trip Sunday with a match at Purdue. The 2 p.m. game will be broadcast live nationwide on the Big Ten Network.
