EVANSTON, Ill. - Soccer can be a cruel sport sometimes. Despite owning an 18-2 advantage in the shot column, the Northwestern men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Holy Cross in the finale of the Lakeside Classic Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The match's lone score came on an own goal by the Wildcats.
Neither squad was able to mount much of an attack in the opening half of play, though NU junior keeper Drew Kotler made a pair of outstanding saves on both of the Crusaders' shots during the first 45 minutes of play.
Northwestern's best chance came in the 25th minute when Kyle Schickel got free on the right edge of the box, but his shot went just wide of the near post.
Holy Cross did an outstanding job of limiting the Wildcats' chances as the guests sat back defensively. The match's definitive play came 60 minutes in when a Crusader played a cross from the left corner into the box where the ball deflected off a Northwestern defender and went into the net.
NU threw everything but the kitchen sink at Holy Cross over the 30 minutes of play. The Wildcats came close on numerous occasions, but the Crusaders made scoring chances difficult after the score as they successfully packed in their defense and held Northwestern at bay.
The hosts had a remarkable 12-0 edge in shots over the second half of play, but could never notch the equalizer.
Northwestern returns to action at noon Central time next Sunday as it opens Big Ten play at Michigan State. The contest is being televised on a tape-delay basis by Big Ten Network at 4 p.m. that afternoon.
