OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) is tied for fourth place following the first round Friday of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, but Northwestern fell one score short of a solid team start, finding itself in an 11th-place tie in the 15-school field.
NU is tied in 11th place with California at 10-over 290, one shot behind 10th-place Texas and three shots in back of Stanford and Illinois, which are tied for eighth. Florida and defending NCAA team champion Augusta State are tied for first after rounds of even-par 280.
Northwestern began on the back nine, teeing off No. 10. The Wildcats played much better on their opening side, carding a combined eight birdies before netting only a trio on the front. The lengthy 496-yard par-4 18th was the most difficult hole Friday, leading to two bogeys and two double-bogeys from the 'Cat contingent while playing at .75 strokes over par for the entire field.
Chun played a steady opening round, ripping off six-straight pars to start his day before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17. He tripped up with a bogey on No. 18, but played the front nine in 1-under 34 by combining a birdie at No. 5 with eight pars.
Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) came out like a house on fire, making three-straight birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 13 to quickly move to 3-under par. He maintained that score until the 18th, where a bogey gave him a 2-under 33 on the back. Three bogeys on the front nine lifted him back over par, where he finished with a 1-over 71, putting him in 19th place with 14 other competitors in the field.

Playing in his first-collegiate event, freshman Brad Shigezawa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou Academy) made the most birdies among the Wildcats with four during Friday's action. He also made six bogies during an up-and-down round to place him 34th place overall with a 2-over 72. Shigezawa was 2-over after three holes before sandwiching birdies at Nos. 15 and 17 around a third bogey at No. 16. He opened his front nine with a birdie at the par-5 first, a bogey on No. 2 and another birdie on No. 3 to put him at even-par through 12 holes. Bogies on each of the front side's par three holes accounted for his 72.
Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) and senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) each carded totals of 9-over 79 to find themselves 71st in the field as individuals.
The second round of the three-day tournament takes place tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 18. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
