ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- After one day of play Saturday at the season-opening Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind., Northwestern is in eighth place in the 15-team field.
The Wildcats opened with a 12-over 296, two shots behind a three-way tie for fifth place on the 7,195 yard, par-71 course at Wolf Run Golf Club. NU was tied with Kentucky, Louisville and Ball State, two strokes behind Michigan, IUPUI and Central Florida. Tulsa held a six-shot advantage after posting an even-par 284.
In the second round, NU improved one stroke to an 11-over 295 to shake loose of its tie and sit in eighth place all by itself. The Wildcats are one stroke behind seventh-place North Florida, two shots behind sixth-place Missouri and just three shots away from a fourth-place tie involving Michigan and Tulsa.
Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) led the Wildcats after posting a 2-over 73 to finish the opening round in a tie for 19th position. He then moved up to a tie for 10th with an identical score in the second round to finish Saturday at 4-over 146.
Senior Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was 26th after a 3-over 74 in the first round, then dropped a pair of strokes to card a 1-over 72 in the second to move up into a tie for 10th alongside Losole at 4-over 146. Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) matched Patel's 3-over 74 Saturday morning before a 4-over 75 left him in 30th position at 7-over 149.
In 43rd position in his first collegiate tourney of the season after putting together several fantastic scores as an amateur over the summer is junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School), who shot a 4-over 75 in the morning before a 5-over 76 in the second round put him at 9-over 151 on the day.
One stroke behind Chun to round out the Wildcats' first-day efforts is senior Josh Dupont (La Canada, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), who improved two strokes from morning to night with scores of 6-over 77 and 4-over 75 to come in at 10-over 152. Dupont is 51st overall.
Sunday's final round will get underway with tee times Sunday morning at Wolf Run Golf Club.
