MORAGA, Calif. -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern fell behind by three goals early and never recovered Sunday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Saint Mary's College.

Freshman Reed Losee had a goal and an assist for the 'Cats, who made a furious attempt at a second-half rally. Losee set up Cody Stanley for a header goal in the 68th minute, then punched the ball in himself seven minutes later. Oliver Kupe and Scott Lakin were each credited with an assist on the second tally.

Northwestern had additional scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of play, with Stanley just missing a header wide of the net off a corner kick and Losee having an additional shot saved by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Doug Herrick in the 83rd minute.

"We dug ourselves too deep of a hole early and couldn't get out," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "When you play a good team like Saint Mary's on the road you can't afford to do that.

"There are still lots of little things we're not doing right at this point, but we've got to regroup and get ready for the Northern Illinois tournament next weekend."

The Gaels scored 39 seconds into the match and increased their lead with goals in the 12th and 18th minutes. Saint Mary's outshot NU 13-12 in the match, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Jonathan Harris made five saves for Northwestern in his second career start as the Wildcats' netminder.

Northwestern is back in action on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Northern Illinois tournament in DeKalb, Ill. The Wildcats will take on Cleveland State at 11:30 a.m. CT.
