EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat freshman Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) of the women's soccer team and senior Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) of the volleyball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Allen scored the lone goal in the 54th minute during Northwestern's thrilling 1-0 upset win over No. 3 UCLA Sunday in Wisconsin. It was the second time in as many weeks that Allen's big game heroics were on display after the freshman scored both goals in a 2-1 overtime victory against DePaul in the 'Cats' season-opener on Aug. 22.
Three matches into her Wildact career, Allen leads NU with 12 total shots, seven of which have been on goal. Her efforts have helped Northwestern remain unbeaten through three games for the first time since 1998.
Moffett was named the tournament MVP as Northwestern captured the Chicagoland Classic title with victories over Loyola (Chicago) and Illinois-Chicago last weekend. Moffett led NU with eight blocks in the championship game Sunday while adding seven kills to the cause. On Saturday, Moffett went for 12 kills and six blocks as NU blasted the Ramblers.
Northwestern's men's fall sports teams begin competition this weekend.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is senior Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) of the women's soccer team. Edwards took the lead on multiple facility tours this summer for campers from the McGaw YMCA. The NU goalkeeper conducted tours at Ryan Field, Welsh-Ryan Arena and the Lakeside facilities before presenting the campers with a Wildcat goodie bag filled with Northwestern sports memorabilia.
