Sabel Moffett Named Candidate For Lowe's Senior CLASS Award

Aug. 26, 2010

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior middle blocker Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) has been named a candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for volleyball, announced Thursday. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence--classroom, character, community and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. This is the first year women's volleyball has been included in the program, as awards are also given out in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, baseball, football, hockey, softball and men's lacrosse.

Moffett has excelled both on and off the court during her Wildcat career. An AVCA honorable mention All-American and All-Big Ten selection in 2009, Moffett ranked among the conference's leaders in nearly every statistical category. Her .349 hitting percentage last season set a program single-season record while her 137 block assists and 165 total blocks both ranked third in the Wildcat record books. A unanimous All-Big Ten preseason selection in 2010, Moffett is 230 kills shy of reaching 1,000 for her career and enters her final season ranked second in program history in hitting percentage (.299), ninth in block assists (279) and 10th in solo blocks (60).

Off the court, Moffett is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection as she graduated this past June with a degree in psychology and is currently pursuing a master's degree in sport administration. One of the Wildcat team captains, Moffett has been extremely involved in community efforts, assisting in a handful of causes including women's basketball Autism Awareness Day, the Special Olympics and serving as one Northwestern's representative at the NCAA Apple Conference, which focuses on promoting student-athlete health and wellness.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of classroom, character, community and competition. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award winners during the 2010 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup championships in early December. Moffett and the rest of the Wildcats get their 2010 season underway Friday evening, making the short trip to DePaul for the Chicagoland Classic. Northwestern faces Loyola (Chicago) at 5 p.m. Friday evening at McGrath Arena, then will face either the host Blue Demons or Illinois-Chicago Saturday. The consolation match starts at 5 p.m. Saturday with the championship match scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
