UNIVERSITY PARK, Wash. -- Northwestern rising junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) fired a 3-under 69 Tuesday in the second round of stroke play at the 2010 United States Amateur Championship, surging into sixth place overall to qualify for the match play portion of the event.

Stroke play at the U.S. Amateur was contested at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Park, Wash., and the Home Course in nearby Dupont, Wash. Chun shot a 2-over 73 Monday on the monstrous 7,742-yard, par 71 Chambers Bay Course (which will host the 2015 U.S. Open and hosted the 2007 Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge) before coming back with a blistering 3-under 69 Tuesday at the Home Course -- a round which featured six birdies from the Wildcat.

Chun now advances to match play as the No. 6 seed in the 64-player bracket. There is a 16-way tie for 57th after the 36 holes of stroke play; those players will return Wednesday morning for a playoff to determine the final six participants -- one of whom will face Chun at 3:20 p.m. CT Wednesday afternoon in the opening round. Chun has shown great match play chops during collegiate play for Northwestern. In the two-year history of the Big Ten Match Play Championship, Chun is an undefeated 7-0-1. That record is the best individual mark in tournament history and helped lead the Wildcats to the team title in February of 2010.

Earlier in the summer, Chun competed in The Open Championship at St. Andrews after finishing as runner-up at the inaugural Asian Amateur Championship in November of 2009 and then moving on to earn his berth through International Final Qualifying -- Asia in March of 2010. Chun represented Northwestern well at St. Andrews, finishing the first day under par before missing the cut by just one stroke.

Chun's Northwestern teammates Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) also participated in the 2010 U.S. Amateur, though they fell short of qualifying for match play.
