The 2009-10 athletic year at Northwestern University was one to be remembered. Filled with a plethora of memorable wins, honors and championships, there was much to be celebrated this past year in Evanston. Be sure to follow along at NUsports.com through August 6 as a look back is taken at just some of the numerous highlights the Wildcats experienced.
EVANSTON, Ill. -- When Emily Fletcher was named Northwestern's head women's golf coach following the 2008 season, one of her main goals was to put the Wildcats back on the national stage. The team took a major step towards that goal during the 2009-10 season, qualifying for the NCAA Central Regional for the first time since 2007.
Battling some of the nation's best teams at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., Northwestern held its own, posting a 93-over 957 during the three-day event to finish 15th overall. Sophomore Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) led the Wildcats with a 21-over 237 to tie for 38th overall, one shot better than freshman teammate Lauren Weaver's (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) 22-over 238.
The appearance in the Regionals capped a memorable season in Evanston as Northwestern finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships, posted a team-best 15 sub-300 rounds and finished among the top-10 in eight of its 12 events. Weaver was also named a second team All-Big Ten selection, the first for Northwestern since 2007.
Off the links, the 'Cats were just as impressive as five golfers were Academic All-Big Ten honorees with junior Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Lederhausen being named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, maintaining a 3.7 GPA or higher for the academic year. Lindenschmidt was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V first team as the entire Wildcat team was honored by the NGCA for having one of the nation's top combined GPAs.
