EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore first baseman/relief pitcher Paul Snieder (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) has been named one of 10 national finalists for the College Baseball Foundation's inaugural 2010 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, sponsored by Washington State.
Snieder established himself as the top two-way player in the Big Ten this season. At the plate, he led the Wildcats with 76 hits, 25 multi-hit games, 15 doubles and a .540 slugging percentage. He also ranked second with 7 home runs, 36 RBI and a .440 on-base percentage, and was third with a .353 batting average and 34 runs scored.
Snieder was also dominant on the mound as he was scored upon just four times in his team-leading 25 appearances. He notched a 2-3 record with a 1.79 ERA while limiting opponents to a .177 batting average. In 40 1/3 innings pitched, he recorded 35 strikeouts. His 12 saves led the Big Ten and tied a school single-season record first established by Chris Nichting in 1986.
For his efforts, Snieder was recognized as a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a reliever.
The Olerud Award will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2 as part of the College Baseball Awards Show.
