June 8, 2010

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern junior left-hander Eric Jokisch (Virginia, Ill./Virginia) was the first Wildcat player selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when the Chicago Cubs tabbed him in the 11th round Tuesday afternoon.

A first-team All-Big Ten selection this season, Jokisch posted a 5-7 overall mark and a 4.39 ERA in 15 appearances, 13 of which were starts. Despite battling an injury early in the season, he still finished with a team-best 92.1 innings pitched which ranks in the top 10 in school history.

Jokisch went 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA in conference play, including tossing a pair of complete games. He paced all Big Ten hurlers with 63.2 innings pitched against league opponents and allowed only six extra-base hits. Jokisch was named the Big Ten co-Pitcher of the Week May 24 after going 8 2/3 innings and picking up the win in the Wildcats' 2-1 victory over Michigan State.

In 2008, Jokisch was honored as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was a second-team All-Big Ten pick. He went 8-2 with a 4.17 ERA in his first season in a Wildcat uniform and his seven Big Ten wins established a new conference record for a true freshman.

In his three seasons at Northwestern, Jokisch has compiled a 17-16 record and a 4.71 ERA.

He was previously drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 39th round following his senior year of high school.
