EVANSTON, Ill. -- Twenty-two student-athletes have been named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2009-10 academic year by the Big Ten Conference. Senior Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) of the wrestling program was recognized as Northwestern's men's recipient, while junior Beth Marshall (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) of the women's basketball team received the women's honor.
The 22 overall winners of this year's award were chosen from among more than 270 male and female previous recipients from Big Ten rosters during the academic year.
Of the 22 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, 17 received Academic All-Big Ten laurels following their respective competitive seasons, including both Metzler and Marshall. Metzler was a four-year starter and a three-year captain for the Wildcats who posted a 14-12 overall record in his senior campaign. Marshall, meanwhile, started all but two games at point guard for Northwestern this season, leading the Big Ten and finishing sixth in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
