EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern led all conference squads and set a school record with four first-team selections when the 2010 All-Big Ten Baseball Teams were announced Tuesday evening. Junior starting pitcher Eric Jokisch, junior third baseman Chris Lashmet, sophomore second baseman Zach Morton and sophomore relief pitcher Paul Snieder each earned first-team distinction as voted on by the league's head coaches.
The quartet was joined by sophomore shortstop Trevor Stevens who was named to the All-Big Ten second team. In addition, first baseman Jack Havey and outfielder Arby Fields were tabbed All-Freshman Team selections.
A second-team All-Big Ten pick as a freshman in 2008, Jokisch led the Wildcats with a 4-2 record and a 3.25 ERA in conference play this season. The left-hander's 63.2 innings pitched led the league, while his ERA mark and 40 strikeouts ranked fourth. The Virginia, Ill., native tossed a pair of complete games against Big Ten foes and came within one out of a third with his performance against Michigan State last Thursday which earned him Big Ten co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
Lashmet, a native of Wilmette, Ill., tied for the Big Ten lead with 42 hits in conference play. He also ranked fifth in slugging percentage (.686) and home runs (5), sixth in batting average (.412) and eighth in on-base percentage (.455). Lashmet hit three home runs and scored eight runs in a three-game series at Michigan May 14-16. He paces Northwestern overall on the season with 8 homers, 43 RBI and 12 multi-RBI games.
An Evanston native, Morton became the second Wildcat player since 1977 to win the Big Ten batting title as he hit an impressive .427 in league play. His .491 on-base percentage ranked third in the conference. Morton has three double-digit game hitting streaks to his credit this season and has collected multiple hits in seven of NU's last eight contests. Defensively, he teamed with Stevens on the middle infield to help the Wildcats turn a league-leading 31 double plays in Big Ten action.
Snieder was honored for his role out of the bullpen as he ranked first in the conference with seven saves. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native posted a 2-2 record with a stellar 1.42 ERA while allowing opponents to bat just .185 against him. Snieder's 14 appearances in league play ranked third in the league. His 12 saves overall are tied for the Northwestern single-season record, matching Chris Nichting's total from the 1986 campaign.
Stevens posted a .319 batting average and ranked third on the team with 15 RBI in Big Ten play, including hitting three home runs. A native of Glenview, Ill., he had big series against eventual conference regular-season champion Minnesota April 16-18, going 6-for-11 including hitting a key three-run homer in the series finale. His 15 stolen bases in all games lead the team.
Havey, a native of Wilmette, Ill., appeared in 16 conference games. His finest performance came against Michigan May 16 as he ripped a three-run homer and later a go-ahead two-run double in the Wildcats' 10-8 victory. Havey also had two hits and drove in a run in series-clinching win at Purdue April 25.
Fields started all 24 conference games in center field for Northwestern in his first season. He batted .277 in league play with 5 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI and ranked fifth in the Big Ten with 17 walks. All three of the round-trippers came in a memorable series at Illinois. On April 30, the Alta Loma, Calif., native went 4-for-6 with a grand slam and a three-run homer in NU's 11-4 win.
Additionally, Chad Noble was named the team's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The honor is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
