Spring Sports Weekly Release #10 ![]()
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Danielle Spencer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) of the women's lacrosse team and junior Eric Jokisch (Virginia, Ill./Virginia) of the baseball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Spencer scored a game-high six points on four goals and two assists to pace Northwestern past Duke in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship Saturday in her final game at Lakeside Field. Spencer scored all four of her goals in the first half as the Wildcats jumped to an insurmountable 10-0 lead over the Blue Devils.
Jokisch hurled 8 2/3 innings on the mound in Northwestern's 2-1 victory over Michigan State Thursday. The junior left-hander surrendered just one run against the Spartans' high-powered offense and made numerous big pitches, inducing Michigan State into five double-play groundouts. The victory played a huge role in Northwestern earning its first Big Ten tournament berth in four seasons.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Brittani Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) of the volleyball team. Gray was among a group of NU student-athletes who visited Edison Elementary School on Friday to meet with fifth-grade girls and discuss her experience as a student-athlete. Brittani shared her story of what motivated her to succeed in sports and school and concluded the day by leading the students through team-building activities.
