EVANSTON, Ill. — During a busy offseason for the Wildcat coaching staff, Northwestern associate head coach Carla Tagliente accompanied the United States U-19 team on its four-game competitive tour of Argentina. Tagliente, formerly a member of the U.S. senior national team, served as an assistant coach for the American team that split its games against the host Argentine team.
The U-19 national team is comprised of 17 players and is led by head coach Diane Madl, also the head coach at Providence College and a college teammate at the University of Connecticut of current Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs.
The U.S. played its first game on April 6 against Argentina, a 2-1 win for the Americans in which they rallied from a first-half deficit and scored the game-winning goal with six minutes to play in the game. The next day, Argentina claimed a bit of revenge with a 3-0 victory on its home soil.
Tagliente's team also faced two experienced club teams on its tour, the U-18 G.E.B.A club and the U-18 Banfield Club. The squad dropped an 8-0 decision to the G.E.B.A team, which featured seven Olympians on its roster, before finishing its trip with a 5-0 win against the Banfield Club.
Following her long international playing career, Tagliente has previously stayed involved with the USA Field Hockey program as coach of the illustrious A-Camp and the High Performance Center Midwest Regional team. In 2004 and 2005, she assisted the U.S. Under-16 team and traveled with them on their annual tour of Holland.
In her first season at Northwestern, Tagliente worked primarily with an NU offense that improved from an average per-game scoring margin of -1.1 in 2008 to +1.15 in 2009.
Tagliente's trip to Argentina with the U-19 came on the heels of Fuchs' travels with the U-17 team to the Youth Pan American Cup in Uruguay. For a complete recap of that team's experience, click here.
