2010 Big Ten Championships Final Results
MADISON, Wis. -- Battling rainy and less-than-ideal weather conditions, Northwestern concluded the final round of the 2010 Big Ten Championships where it started - in sixth place. The Wildcats posted a 21-over 309 over the final 18 holes at the University Ridge Golf Course to finish the weekend with a 54-over 1,206, led by sophomore Kylie Fuller's (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) 13-over 301.
"While I would have liked to finish higher in the standings, there were so many positives this week," said head coach Emily Fletcher. "Rebecca's game is really coming together, Kylie and Kelsey gave us two low rounds and Alex is really swinging well. We are so proud of Lauren being selected to the All-Big Ten team."
Fuller, who began the day in a three-way tie for first place atop the Northwestern scorecard, finished the tournament with a 5-over 77 in Sunday's final round, which propelled her into a tie for 16th-place overall among the individual rankings. Fuller finished two shots better than junior teammate Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), who just missed cracking the top-20 with a 15-over 303, including a 7-over 79 over the final 18 holes, to finish 21st.
The Wildcats sister duo of Alexandra and Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) fittingly tied for third among the Northwestern competitors, each posting a 16-over 304 over the weekend. Rebecca had the low round of the day for the Wildcats, shooting a 2-over 74 with Alex finishing with an 8-over 80 in Sunday's final round as the pair tied for 22nd.
Freshman Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows), who earlier in the day was announced as a second team All-Big Ten selection, closed out her first career Big Ten Championships with a 22-over 310 after posting a 7-over 79 over the final 18 holes. Fellow freshman Anne Ormson (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) rounded out the Northwestern scorecard with a 36-over 324.
Northwestern began the day tied with Indiana for sixth-place in the team standings and one was shot shy of overtaking the Hoosiers (53-over 1,205) for fifth-place. The Wildcats were able to overtake Minnesota (56-over 1,208), who began the day in fifth ahead of Northwestern as the three teams jostled for position throughout the day.
Purdue captured its third-straight Big Ten Championship, finishing at 6-over 1,158 and taking a convincing 27 stroke decision over Michigan State (33-over 1,185). Ohio State (37-over 1,189) placed third with the host Badgers (42-over 1,194) checking in at fourth. The Boilermakers' Laura Gonzalez, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, captured the individual title with an 8-under 280.
Weaver, who led the Wildcats in scoring average heading into the weekend, becomes the first Northwestern golfer to be named All-Big Ten since 2007. She is the seventh different Wildcat to capture All-Big Ten honors and ups the total number of honors to 13 in the program's history. Weaver has been impressive in her freshman campaign, posting seven top-20 finishes including a pair among the top-five.
With the regular season now complete, Northwestern now awaits the announcement of the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf Regional fields, which will be unveiled Monday evening. The Wildcats, who were ranked 36th in this week's Golfweek Sagarin rankings, are hopeful to be among the 64 teams selected to this year's tournament, as information will be posted at NUsports.com as it becomes available.
