CHICAGO -- Northwestern competed in this weekend's Chicagoland Championships hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday where it saw a bevy of runners cruise past their previous career bests in the 5K. Among them were freshman Audrey Huth and sophomore Sophie Ewald, who each surpassed the track record at Chicago's Ted Haydon Track in placing first and second, respectively.
Huth clocked in at 16:52.57, bettering her 5K time from one week earlier by more than 30 seconds. Ewald, meanwhile, ran her first official 5K since coming off a redshirt season last fall and crossed in 17:01.29 to take second.
Joining Huth and Ewald in the sub-18-minute range was freshman Allegra Mayer, who was fourth in a time of 17:48, cutting 24 seconds off her time from the Ted Haydon Invitational on April 3 and setting a personal best in the process.
"With our cross country-only status and the limit we have on competitions in the spring, each meet is a valuable opportunity to see if our hard work all winter and spring has paid off," said Northwestern head coach April Likhite. "On Friday our women took great advantage of their opportunity to race and pulled off some fantastic performances."`
Also in the 5K, sophomore Molly Waterhouse crossed with a time of 18:19 just ahead of freshman Lauren Neuschel, who improved her previous time by 47 seconds to place ninth. Abby Tracy finished three seconds behind her teammates in 10th place.
NU also entered one competitor into the 10,000-meter race as freshman Ashley Greenwell made her debut in the event. Greenwell made the most of her first official 10K, finishing in fourth place in 38:12.51.
"Seeing so many improvements throughout our roster in one meet was one of my most exciting coaching moments," Likhite said. "It was a great night for Northwestern Cross Country."
