COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) earned the first honorable mention All-America honor of his career Friday evening at the NCAA Championships hosted by Ohio State, placing 15th overall in the nation in the 200 individual medley.

After swimming a career-best 1:44.69 in the preliminary session to qualify in 15th position, Tyler maintained that place with a 1:45.17 in the consolation final. He scored two points for Northwestern with the effort, putting the Wildcats in 28th place as a team following the first day of action at the meet.

Tyler gives Wildcat head coach Jarod Schroeder an All-American in his first year at the helm of the program. He also gives Northwestern an All-American in 12 of the last 15 seasons dating to 1996.

Northwestern's NCAA Championships continue tomorrow, Saturday, March 27, with Tyler swimming the 400 IM and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) competing in the 100 fly.
