COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) qualified for the consolation final of the 200 Individual Medley during Friday afternoon preliminary heats at the 2010 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Ohio State.

Tyler swam a career-best time of 1:44.69 to place 15th overall, earning himself a lane for Friday night's `B' final by lowering his previous career-low and seed time of 1:44.93 by .24 of a second. Tyler's berth gives him the opportunity to put points on the board for Northwestern in the team standings.

"Alex had a really good swim this morning," head coach Jarod Schroeder said. "We think he can get a little better tonight in what should be a strong race. The whole consolation heat is within nine-tenths of each other."

Tonight's finals heats get underway at 6 p.m. CT. The 2010 NCAA Championships schedule was pushed back an entire day after an illness struck several teams in the field, so today's events are what previously were slated for Thursday.
