Big Ten Championships Get Underway in West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 2010 Big Ten Championships began Wednesday evening in West Lafayette, Ind., with a pair of relays. The full meet slate will get underway Thursday morning.

The team of Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen), Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School), Katie Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)) swam an NCAA `B' cut of 1:41.39 to finish seventh in the 200 medley relay, the first event of the meet.

In the second race, the 800 free relay, Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School), Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's), Meredith King (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) and Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) turned in a `B' provisional qualifying time of 7:11.34 to take sixth place. Shishkoff's anchor leg of 1:45.63 was the fastest 200 free split in the entire field.

After two events, the extremely early standings place Northwestern in seventh position with 50 points, four points behind Ohio State.

The first full day of competition at the Big Ten Championships begins at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow morning, Thursday, Feb. 18, with finals starting at 5:30 p.m. CT. For live results and a bevy of other information on the meet, link to Purduesports.com.
