MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Northwestern wrapped up competition at the National Junior Olympics in Memphis as a handful of Wildcats competed against fencers from across the country. It was the final individual tournament of the 2009-10 season as Northwestern now turns its sights towards the stretch run of the season.
The highlight of the four-day tournament was an 11th-place finish by sophomore Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) in the foil in a field of 145 competitors. Fellow sophomore Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central) placed 52nd with sophomore Ariel Stein (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country) checking in at 65th and freshman Emily Bruhl (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) placing 94th.
In the epée, freshman Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) was the top Northwestern finisher, placing 45th out of 172 fencers, with fellow freshman Kendrick Mooney (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) finishing 117th. The Wildcats did not have any fencers compete in the sabre.
Fifth-ranked Northwestern returns home this weekend for the second installment of the NU Duals on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21, at Patten Gymnasium. Action gets underway at 8 a.m. both days with admission free of charge.
