EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the final day of action in Northwestern's inaugural event of 2010, the 'Cats posted victories in seven of their eight singles matches to close out a successful Wildcat Invitational at the Combe Tennis Center. NU's Kate Turvy was declared the tournament's singles champion while Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu were named the doubles winners.
For the weekend, Turvy finished with three singles victories capped off by a hard-fought 7-6, 6-2 victory Sunday over DePaul's Anna Redecsi. Northwestern sophomore Elena Chernyakova also was unbeaten in singles over the three-day affair after defeating Hannah Blatt of Vanderbilt Sunday morning, 6-1, 6-1.
Stacey Lee coasted to a pair of singles wins on Sunday beginning with her 6-2, 6-0 defeat of DePaul's Sandra Zmak. Lee then picked up her second win of the weekend and her eighth of the season when she defeated another Blue Demon, Cali Gustafson, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Lauren Lui and freshman Linda Abu Mushrefova rounded out the singles wins for Northwestern, as Lui defeated DePaul's Gia McKnight 6-1, 6-1, for the 107th win of her career at NU. Abu Mushrefova, meanwhile, knocked off Vanderbilt's Megan Gornet, 6-4, 6-2.
Second-ranked Northwestern's dual season begins in earnest on Saturday, Jan. 23, when the 'Cats welcome William & Mary to Combe Tennis Center at 10 a.m. NU is coming off a 2008-09 season in which it posted a 28-2 record, won its 11th consecutive Big Ten championship and finished with a No. 2 final national ranking.
