Day Two of Wildcat Invite in the Books in Evanston

Jan. 16, 2010

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern wrapped up the second full day of play at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, gaining plenty of early-season experience against No. 22 Vanderbilt and No. 45 DePaul. NU freshman Brittany Wowchuk opened the day with a doubles win and easily won her singles match against Vandy's Erica Robertson, 6-1, 6-2.

Saturday's play began with round-robin doubles competition during which Northwestern notched a pair of wins over tandems representing DePaul. Wowchuk and fellow freshman Kate Turvy dispatched of Gia McKnight and Kirsten Gambrell by a score of 8-4. Also scoring a win was the duo of Lauren Lui and Elena Chernyakova, who bested DePaul's ninth-ranked doubles team of Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic 8-6.

Following a break, the tournament transitioned to singles play where Wowchuk was the first off the courts for NU following a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson.

On court three, Lui was locked in a tight match with Vanderbilt's Keilly Ulery from the get-go, with Ulery taking a 7-5 decision in the first set. Ulery continued her strong play in the second, going up 5-0 before Lui fought to come all the way back and tie the set at five-all. Lui pushed the set to a tiebreaker where the action remained a dead heat, but Lui persevered to win 13-11 in dramatic fashion. Down a break in the third, she continued to rally until Ulery was finally able to win the third set 6-4.

Like Wowchuk, the 85th-ranked Turvy recorded her second singles win in as many days when she knocked off DePaul's Selma Salkovic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Turvy trailed 4-3 in the second before winning the last three games to take the match.

Meanwhile, 12th-ranked Maria Mosolova completed her stay at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to fifth-ranked Yasmin Schnack of UCLA.

The final day of the Wildcat Invitational begins at 9 a.m. Sunday in NU's Combe Tennis Center. Six singles matches between Northwestern and Vanderbilt will be followed by a final six singles matches involving all three competing teams.
