BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Northwestern swept its four opponents Friday in its annual holiday training trip competition, this year held at Florida Atlantic University. NU topped FAU, 163-71; Florida International, 174-49; Clemson, 165-72; and Division II Findlay, 174-27.
The meet was held in an outdoor pool during a torrential downpour, the third-straight day of heavy rains in the Boca Raton area.
The Wildcats got the party started with a win in the 400 medley relay, getting a time of 3:50.79 from Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen), Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School), Meghan Cavanaugh (Anchorage, Alaska/East Anchorage) and Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's).
Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) and Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) then swept the 1,000 free, with Kocsis turning in a 10:21.86 and Grigg a 10:25.92. In the next individual event, Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) captured the 200 free with a 1:51.61. Teammate Meredith King (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) came in third and Caitlin Masney (Hong Kong, China./Chinese International School) was fourth in the race.
Taylor Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) led a 1-2 sweep of the 50 free along with Teisha Lightbourne (Nassau, Bahamas/Peddie School (N.J.)). Reynolds swam a 24.66 while Lightbourne had a 24.69.
Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was NU's top finisher in the 200 IM with a 2:08.25 to come in second. She was followed in third by Jacquie Godbe (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens).
Hannah Points (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) captured the 200 fly with a 2:05.11 to lead a 1-2-3 Wildcat sweep. She was joined by King in second and Cavanaugh in third. Wong and Masney then took the top two spots in the 100 free with times of 51.97 and 53.33, respectively.
Four Wildcats came out on top of the 200 back, led by Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) with a 2:05.48. Meaghan Fenn (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) was second, Engstrom third and Godbe fourth.
Kocsis and Shishkoff led the field in the 500 free with Kocsis swimming a 5:02.01 for her second win of the day. Wilson then led teammates Points and Patterson in a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 breast. Wilson's winning time was 2:19.53, nearly three full seconds faster than Points in second.
NU rounded out the meet with a first-place 1:36.45 in the 200 free relay. Wong, Shishkoff, Alex Kraus (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills) and Shelby Johnson (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) comprised the team for NU.
