MANCHESTER, England -- Northwestern alumni Matt Grevers and Mike Alexandrov both won individual events to help Team USA to an 89-33 lead over the European All-Stars Friday after the first day of the Duel in the Pool competition.
Though neither Wildcat was involved, five World Records and a massive revision of the European and American record books took place at the meet. The U.S. men jumped out to a 48-13 advantage after day one, while the U.S. women were in front with a 41-20 lead to account for the 89-33 composite score.
Grevers won the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 1:48.74 while Alexandrov conquered the 200 breast field with a 2:03.72. Alexandrov was swimming for the USA for the first time after the Bulgarian native switched his sport nationality about a year ago. He previously competed in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games for his native Bulgaria.
Grevers is a Team USA veteran who won two gold medals and a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Duel in the Pool continues tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 19, in England. For more information and results, check out the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Recap. (Information from the linked recap was used in this NUsports.com report.
