Dec. 11, 2009

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's soccer associate head coach Andy Fleming has been recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as the 2009 Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

He will be honored Jan. 14 along with the other regional winners at the 2010 NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.

"This a great award for Andy and truly deserved," Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. "He has been a very big part of our success over the last three years, three of the most successful seasons in NU history. We finished each year with an RPI in the top 10 in the country and Andy's skills in training the team and recruiting great players who are also great people were among the biggest factors in our success."

Fleming has helped the Wildcats reach the NCAA tournament every year during his three seasons on the Northwestern staff, including reaching the national quarterfinals in 2008 and the third round this season. NU finished the 2009 campaign with an 11-5-4 record and a second-place Big Ten standing, the school's top conference finish in program history.

A native of Braintree, Mass., Fleming has been honored by College Soccer News as one of the nation's top assistant coaches on seven occasions.
