Fall Sports Weekly Release #13 -- PDF Format
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) of the women's swimming team and junior Jack Hillgard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) of the men's soccer team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Wong had a hand in breaking three Norris Aquatics Center pool records and nine different NCAA `B' standard swims to help Northwestern to a 620-point margin of victory over the field at the six-team TYR Invitational. Wong set an individual pool record in the 50 free (22.77) and contributed to records for the 800 free relay (7:16.36) and 200 free relay (1:31.92) teams. She also won the 100 free with a `B' cut time of 49.82.
Hillgard scored Northwestern's first two goals in its dominating 3-1 win over Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA Championship on Sunday. Hillgard, who entered Sunday's game with two career goals, found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick in the first half and later finished a perfect cross by Eamon O'Neill to give the 'Cats a 2-0 cushion in the second.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) of the men's golf team. Denison and many other NU student-athletes attended the Morton Grove Library's Literacy Night on Nov. 19. Matt and the other students assisted with the evening by reading stories to children and sharing with the attendees what their favorite books as kids were to help encourage them to read as much as possible.
