EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern University junior forward Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) has been named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Men's Soccer Academic All-America Second Team. He is the third Wildcat to earn the honor in the last two seasons, joining Carl Pett and Drew Ratner who were also named to the second team a year ago.
Eliason carries a 3.38 grade-point average while majoring in communication studies. He was an Academic All-Big Ten selection a year ago. Eliason is the fourth Wildcat men's soccer player to earn Academic All-America distinction, joining Pett, Ratner and Jeremy Cook who was a second-team pick in 2002 and a first-team selection the following year.
Eliason's 13 goals this season are the second-highest season total in Northwestern history and rank him among the nation's leaders in the category. A unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection this year, Eliason is tied for the NU all-time record with 30 career goals.
He has helped the Wildcats to a 10-4-4 record to date and the No. 9 national seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Northwestern hosts the winner of Thursday's matchup between Green Bay and host Notre Dame at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Field.
